For transformative contributions to the theory of stochastic analysis, particularly the theory of regularity structures in stochastic partial differential equations.

Comments

It is truly an honor to be awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics. While this is a tremendous encouragement for continuing to explore further, it also provides the opportunity to reflect on the many people and lucky circumstances that made this happen. I am very grateful to my doctoral advisor J.-P. Eckmann for sharing his cheerful approach to both science and life, and for teaching me what makes a good mathematical problem. Few mathematicians work in isolation and I’ve been fortunate to be able to interact with many colleagues and collaborators, learning much in the process. The work recognized by this prize could not have existed without the contributions of many others. I would also like to thank the Leverhulme Trust, the ERC, and the Royal Society whose support allowed me to enjoy a reduced teaching load and to concentrate on research. Finally, many thanks go to my family and especially to my wife Xue-Mei Li for providing inspiration and unwavering support in all matters.
